Using TikTok to promote others isn’t something most users do. At least, few that I have seen go about doing it consistently, with intention or structure.
Maybe it’s because we live in a world where most people are only interested in entertainment or in their own benefit, such as business growth. Many people promote their own businesses on TikTok, and that’s not a bad thing at all.
But it’s so easy and fun to promote other people that you might want to consider doing that, too. Full disclosure: I use the clock app for all of the above and more. TikTok is a search engine, and you can learn about so many things there. Just use the search function (the hourglass symbol that’s used on so many websites). Canningtok, anyone? Foraging! Sewing, parenting, personal finances, entrepreneurship…really, you name it.
Examples of using TikTok to promote others
Here are some of the videos I’ve made on TikTok to promote other people. I have some others in draft mode and will drip them out over time (and record more and do the same with them). Some of these are authors of books edited by Jennifer Harshman.

While most of us heard of TikTok as being “for silly dances and lip syncing,” this platform is for so much more. If you’re not on there, I suggest setting up a profile. It only takes a minute. If you are on there, follow me (@Jennifer_Harshman) if you’re interested in any of the following:

How I got started creating on TikTok
For a long time, I really resisted making any content on the platform. I was just a consumer of content. Then, there was a TikTok pro who visited Platform Launchers.
Melissa Lea Hughes came on as our guest expert that night.
She asked who had been thinking about using the social media platform for growing their business.
My hand went up.
She very kindly asked why I hadn’t done it yet.
Per usual, I said I needed a direction to go in and didn’t want to stick with posting about the same thing all the time. Being a textbook ADHDer and entrepreneur type, these things are true:
- I get bored doing the exact same thing repeatedly (thank heavens no two books are the same).
- Scattering my energy is always a risk (too many ideas).
- Being directionless is easy but something I hate (did I mention I have too many ideas?).
- Point me in the right direction, and if it interests me/I can do it, I’ll be productive.
- Melissa answered my question about that with advice to pick a few “content pillars” and to make videos for them. The next morning, I made and posted my first video and have been posting almost daily since then.
Learning to make short-form videos
I’ve only been recording videos since 6/22/22, and as of 7/19/22, I have published 100 videos on TikTok. Of those, at least 11 are examples of using TikTok to promote others. I didn’t have a set percentage I was shooting for; that’s just what happened naturally.
Please know you can do this! You can make videos and get into the practice of using TikTok to promote others.
When I first started recording videos on there, I knew nothing. I’ve figured out some things with Melissa’s help and a lot of experimentation.
Now I need to learn how to get my videos from there and share them on other social media platforms. There’s still more I need to learn.
Go, have fun with it. Follow me, and I’ll probably follow you back!
As you’re creating your content, ask yourself whom you can put over. Who has helped you? Whom can you promote?
