Hordes of people are podcasting now, and you may be one of them, but it’s a pretty good bet that you’re not having your podcasts transcribed. You should be. Why transcribe your podcasts?
Transcribing your podcast gives you written material that is ready to be used for your website content, special reports or white papers, giveaways, opt-ins, and lead magnets. This written content can even be compiled into a book! You can end up with a nice, clean document you can use in several ways. It would be foolish not to make use of it.
Podcast transcription service
If you have someone transcribe your podcast for you, you can have that nice document for just a small amount of money and none of your time or effort (transcribing is pretty tedious and it takes an inexperienced person a long time to do it, but don’t worry, the team members here are HarshmanServices are sickos that way because they enjoy it, and do a great job of it).
Whether you hire us or not, be sure to hire someone who does general transcription. Legal and medical transcription service providers tend to charge more than a general transcription service does, because of their specialized training, which is fair, but you don’t need that unless your podcast is about medical or legal topics. If you don’t need it, why pay for it? Hire a general transcriptionist.
Also, be sure to hire a native English speaker, or what you get back might not make any sense at all. There are too many figures of speech in American English for a non-native speaker to trip over and get wrong. Find someone who has just what you need and can do it well.
Transcription gives you something positive, by way of content you can use for other things. It also helps you avoid something negative: being sued. Sued?! Why would anyone sue you for not having your podcast transcribed? Is that even possible?
Avoid getting sued under ADA
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a law that requires things to be accessible to people who have disabilities. This means ramps or lifts for wheelchair users, braille for the blind, and providing sign language interpreters, closed captioning, or written versions of audio and video for the hearing impaired. People can sue you if they can’t access your materials.
If someone wants to make use of your podcast, for example, and they can’t because they’re deaf and you don’t have it transcribed, they may sue you. Will you lose? Depending on what the court finds, you may not lose in court, but you’ll have legal fees and hassle, so if you’re sued, you lose either way.
Podcasts (and any audios or videos) which are not transcribed present a risk to you. Transcribing your podcasts gives you protection from getting sued under ADA and it gives you content you can repurpose several ways. Stay safe, and benefit from doing the right thing.
Whether you’re a moving-toward kind of person, which means moving toward good things, pleasure, and goals; or whether you’re a moving-away from kind of person, which means moving away from pain, risk, displeasure . . . transcribe your podcasts. You’ll be glad you did.
Transcription rates
General transcription rates at Harshman Services start at $2.00 per audio minute. There are inadequate providers who charge less, but your content is important and worth hiring the right team. There are other excellent providers who charge more, but why pay more than necessary?
Here you have the option of smooth verbatim transcription (eliminating the false starts, “um” and “uh” and similar utterances) or content transcription (edited to correct grammar and shape it into a readily-usable format).
We recommend content transcription, because it:
- gives you a document you may use in several ways
- is more helpful to you than smooth verbatim is, and it
- costs the same as smooth verbatim transcription does, but gives you more value.
