I’m the editor of You Are the Brand by Mike Kim. My signed contributor’s copy just came in the mail.
Almost all of the books I’m honored to help bring into the world (see a sampling here) are enjoyable for me to work on. Being the editor of You Are the Brand was joyful, educational, and revealing to me. I hadn’t known how Mike had been back when he was in college. We met long after that stage of his life. He still has a fun personality, and I’m grateful for that. If you want to know what kind of shenanigans he got up to in school, read the book. Mike says you can build a business around your expertise, ideas, message, and personality. Before you can do that effectively, you have to know that you are the brand.
Importance of personal brand
A lot of people are tired of hearing the phrase “personal brand.” People who are or want to be influencers use the phrase so often, and it can feel worn out and inauthentic. One group of people in the personal brand space put out a false version of themselves, thinking that image will bring the results they want.
Another group overshares in the name of authenticity. They talk nonstop about their issues, sometimes revealing things that are uncomfortable to read about. That doesn’t work well, either.
So, what does? Mike Kim’s 8-step blueprint.
In You Are the Brand, Mike Kim shares his proven 8-step blueprint that has helped build the brands for some of today’s most influential thought leaders and his own personal brand. In this practical and inspiring book, you will learn the following and more:
- How to identify and showcase your unique expertise
- How to gain clarity on your message, market, and model
- What the most effective marketing strategy is
- Whether you are a How-To-Preneur or an Ideapreneur
- The three kinds of personal stories that ensure you stand out in your market
- The simple “9-Box Grid” that shows you how to price your products and services
- How to cultivate relationships that skyrocket your revenue and influence
Editor of You Are the Brand
You might say, “Well, of course she recommends the book. She edited it, so why wouldn’t she?” That is a fair question. But if you knew how this industry works, you’d know that often, authors do not take an editor’s advice and instead reject the correction of errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Sometimes the publisher might have different ideas, too.
So, just because I’m the editor of You Are the Brand or any other book, that doesn’t automatically mean I’d recommend it. Due to how some books turn out after they leave the editor’s hands, not every book that an editor works on is one they would recommend. This is one I do recommend. I recommend it to anyone who is in business or wants to be.
